Sabi Sabi

All images on this page were taken during a family trip to the Sabi Sabi private game reserve in South Africa in February 2011. The reserve is situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve which flanks the south western section of the Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand Reserve is one of the parks that make up the Greater Kruger National Park.

We spent 3 nights at the Bush Lodge and were very fortunate to have an excellent tracker and ranger who took us on six amazing safari drives.  We traversed this vast reserve in an open air vehicle.  It took a little time to get used to being in the open air with so many beautiful animals who were going about their daily business as though we weren't there.  There was a rifle attached to the front of our vehicle, but the ranger explained that we only had three bullets and that they could only be used to scare away the animals if something went wrong. He went on to explain that the animals would view us as an innaminate object that was not a threat.  We soon realised that meant we could park beside a large predator and take photos in complete safety.

This was one of our most memorable travel experiences and my first serious attempt at wildlife photograph.  One of these images reached the final stage of judging in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.  That photo is shown in the award winners page on this website.
